Abstract

For the past several months, I have been at work on a honors/Global Scholars project that explores the techniques and critical reception of two LGBTQ+ graphic novels: My Favorite Thing is Monsters by Emil Ferris, which centers around a young lesbian preteen, and Transiciones by Élodie Durand, which centers around a mother’s struggle to understand her child’s transition from female to male. My research explores the continued development of graphic novels over the last decade, which has allowed international authors like Elodie Durand and Emil Ferris to openly portray LGBTQ issues through a well-respected literary form that utilizes both storyline and illustrated techniques to convey important themes to the changing climate of LGBTQ representation in literature. This research highlights the importance of LGBTQ+ graphic novels to the public, both as a medium of representation and a way to educate people about important LGBTQ+ issues.
