Letter from J.W. Messick to James B. Finley

Letter from J.W. Messick to James B. Finley

J.W. Messick

Description

Messick has received a letter from Finley and is struck by the contrast between Finley's kindness and the persecution Union Chapel has received from other members of the Ohio Conference. Messick believes that the Methodist Episcopal Church in Cincinnati has not commanded much influence in the city because the churches have not been pewed. Union Chapel is now receiving families from other denominations who prefer the doctrine of the MEC, but are used to pewed churches. Messick does not argue that all ME churches should be pewed, but Union Chapel should be allowed to use the pew rent system and allow women and men to sit together during worship. Abstract Number - 467
